Sports MedicineIn many sports, the lower limbs and feet are
at great risk for injury. Such injuries were seen mostly with male
athletes, but as the number of women's athletic programs has skyrocketed,
so has the number of women with lower limb/feet afflictions. Most of
these injuries could have been easily prevented simply by wearing good
supportive athletic shoes.
"If an injury is sustained, do not ignore
it - have it examined with 48 hours of the accident. The use of
rest, ice, compression and elevation is normally recommended during the
initial 48 hours following injury. Professional treatment is very
important no matter how minor the injury may appear to be, because many
injuries can become chronic if not treated properly."
Injuries are not only limited to sporting competitions. With the
country's growing emphasis on physical fitness, people of all ages are
becoming more and more active. Increased activity my result in
greater incidence of injury.
