ArthritisThe foot and ankle are commonly affected by arthritis. In fact, the
podiatric physician may be the first to diagnose a systemic arthritis based on
specific findings in the foot and ankle. Arthritic symptoms can vary, but
often include stiffness, swelling, and pain with movement of the affected joint.
Inflammatory arthridities, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout, are often
associated with a tender, warm, swollen joint. In contrast, degenerative
arthritis (osteoarthritis) presents with a painful limitation of joint motion
and surrounding bone formation or spurring.
The arthritic process may be accompanied by structural deformity, which can
progressively damage the joint and lead to chronic pain. With prompt
diagnosis and early intervention, these problems can be effectively treated by
conservative and surgical measures. The physicians at LVFAS are
experienced in the diagnosis and management of arthritic foot and ankle
disorders. Arthritic pain should not be ignored or perceived as something
you "have to live with." Our physicians would rather help you "walk" away
from it!
